Cooking or baking, you need to separate your egg yolks from the whites, and pronto—after all, your in-laws will be on their way over before you know it. Instead of paying for an egg separator or weird little thing like that, go chug a bottle of water—that’s all you’re going to need—an emptied, plastic bottle to get you skillet or oven ready.

In the video above, Paul, the weblog guy behind GoRepairs on YouTube shows you how it’s done. It’s a bit comical watching the video as he captures the light-hearted essence of failed attempts to separate a yolk from the whites. From attempting with a drill, pliers, and scissors, he totally gets how the most of us over-complicate the simplest of things.

All you have to do is squeeze the plastic bottle, place it by the yolk, release the death grip you’ve got going on there, and suck it right up into the bottle. Then, squeeze the plastic bottle again to push out the yolk either in the trash or another container if you need it. It’s really simple and costs you nothing except for a little hydration (I’m corny, I know).

I’m impressed in how this literally takes seconds and keeps your yolks intact. I can remember being in the kitchen watching my mother baking and needing to separate her yolks from the egg whites. She’d use each of the broken halves of an eggshell to repetitively pour the egg into to separate it. Now if she’d only known a water bottle could have shaved off some of that time and mess. Knowledge is power folks.
