Apply Fabric to Walls with Liquid Starch for Temporary Wallpaper

Apartment dwellers and wallpaper-phobes rejoice. You can cover up ugly wall paint jobs and wallpaper with liquid starch and fabric. It sounds absolutely crazy – I’ve never heard of it before, but apparently it’s a thing and actually works.

Ashley Poskin from ApartmentTherapy gives you the full tutorial on how to hang fabric to your walls with liquid starch. If you’re not ready to commit to paint or wallpaper, it’s the perfect temporary fix. While the fabric sticks and is sturdy, all you need to do is remove it by giving the fabric a warm sponge bath. Then, you can take your fabric with you when you move out, or easily change it up when you want something different. It's really the best of all worlds.

This task is definitely a two-person job. Fair warning, this DIY project is a bit intense and messy – make sure to dress accordingly and protect your floors. Although intensive, the application is simple! After you buy your fabric, make sure to wash it and your walls, allowing both of them to dry thoroughly. Next, roll on liquid starch onto your walls, and apply the fabric. Once covered, saturate the fabric with more liquid starch. You then can use a utility knife to cut off any access fabric from your baseboards and outlets once dry.

It’s best not to use this method on textured walls, but you can get away with applying fabric to panels, painted walls, and existing wallpaper without damaging any finishes.

**Please be mindful of fabric flammability as a potential fire hazard.
