Collect Gallons of Water from an Air Conditioner with a Rain Barrel

Did you know you can collect condensation water from your air conditioner? Apparently this is a thing, especially in dry areas like Texas and California subject to drought, and all you need is plastic tubing and a cheap rain barrel. This neat DIY project actually serves as a double whammy because not only are you collecting condensate from you’re A/C, you’re also collecting rainwater too!

Over at OurCloverHouse, DeeDee and Bobby used a rain barrel to collect condensate from their air conditioner in their attic. Condensation from air conditioners is usually 99% pure and is generally safe for use. The water has no chemicals, but may have some dust.

Since rain barrels don’t have a lid, it is necessary to saw off the top and wash the inside thoroughly—to collect rainwater, drill some more holes at the top. Then place a screen between your lid and tank to keep any debris out. The couple also added a spigot at the bottom of the barrel to access the water easily. Depending on your setup, it may be necessary to build a platform for your rain barrel to set on in order to access the spigot. Next, use PVC pipes to direct the condensate water from the air conditioner drip line to the barrel. Within just a week the bloggers filled up the 55-gallon barrel. That’s a ton of water! It’s a good idea to keep an idea on your water levels so you don’t cause any damage to your unit.

The condensate is perfect for watering your garden, bathing your animals, and washing your car. As a general rule of thumb, don’t use the condensate for drinking or aquariums.
