How to Clean a Cast Iron Skillet

Cleaning a cast iron skillet seems impossible and is often looked at as an intimidating, big task. Nonsense! Here’s what you need to do to clean your favorite cast iron skillet—I promise it isn’t so bad.

Here's a couple things you can do:

  1. If you want to clean your skillet for a general maintenance cleaning, make sure the skillet warm first from your stove. Then, wash it with a sponge and hot water.
  2. If you want to remove food residue that won't budge, boil water in the skillet or use course sea salt to scrub the area. Then, repeat step one.

Once you’ve cleaned your skillet, let’s season it. Seasoning your skillet doesn't need to be done every time you use it, only when food starts to stick or you've scrubbed the smooth texture off. To accomplish a well-seasoned pan, apply a light layer of oil with a paper towel on the skillet, and bake on the oil for an hour on low heat in the oven.

A good rule of thumb: avoid using chemicals, soap and steel wool on your cast iron to protect the seasoning—it's much easier to take care of your skillet on a daily basis.
