How to Quickly Make a Hibachi Grill with Only 20 Bricks

If you want a temporary grill set up without paying the big bucks, now’s the time to dig out twenty bricks from your shed. You’re going to make an impermanent hibachi grill that’s just as easy to make as it is to tear down.

In the video above, hilariously entertaining Chef John from Food Wishes shows you how to create a temporary hibachi grill in the matter of minutes. To get started on this outdoor project, you need twenty bricks, a grate, and hot coals.

It’s important to build your grill on flat ground. Chef John also coats his pre-grill area in dampened wood chips so no unwelcomed fires start. Really make sure to take all of his tips to heart. Let’s play it safe tonight.

Loosely place twelve bricks in a rectangular shape and then lay eight on top, arranged in a square. Depending on the heat you’re looking for, you can either lay your bricks on their side or flat for more fire action. Once you place and test to make sure your grate will set nicely on top, add in your hot coals, set the grill on the bricks, and you’re ready to go.

My favorite tip in this video is Chef John’s suggestion of placing a large terra cotta pot on top of your cooking food, converting your hibachi grill into an instant clay oven. Now, that’s way cool.

Some of the YouTube comments suggest to use firebricks for a longer-lasting set up. The only concern would be remembering to dampen the wood chips before grilling; needless to say, if you want to make this a permanent thing, you may need to build it a bit differently.

With the constant cooling and heating, you may risk your plain bricks cracking, decreasing their longevity; if that doesn’t bother you, good ole basic bricks will do especially since this is a temporary deal. Whatever it is you plan to do, make sure to avoid any used bricks with glaze, residue, or used in construction.

It’s a practical and temporary set up if you’re lacking space or aren’t a big griller; plus, you get to impress you friends with your awesome grilling skills. Chef John offers awesome grilling tips to make your food taste better, too. Extra grilling bragging bonus points have been awarded.
