Interlocking Electric Cord Keeps Itself Tidy so You Don’t Have To

You can only have so many Lego hands and zip ties to keep your cords under control. While there have been various products out there on the market to manage cords, nothing looks as promising as this zipper-like electric cord that interlocks together to keep itself tidy. Awarded as the reddot winner of 2014 for design concept, the Building Block Wire is invented by designers from Ningbo Institute of Technology at Zhejiang University.

The electrical cord contains a sheath of interlocking teeth that allows you to fold the cord in on itself, depending on the length you need. The concept is practical. How many times are cords way too long or too short? Before you know it, a jungle of spider cords are all over the place, collecting dust, and making a pet parent worried (especially if said cords are on the ground). With a simple pull, the Building Block Wire will extend and give you extra room you need.

While the cord won’t be a quick fix to cables now like a wire hub, it would be beneficial to swap out pesky cords to organize your area. Plus, if you had a few of these cords, I don’t see why you couldn’t zip them together into cool configurations—especially behind a computer desk. Now, it would be awesome if the designers made some of the cord’s slotted teeth a hub for other cables and wires to snap into for the ultimate cable management.

Definitely a cool idea I hope reaches the market sooner rather than later.
