Organize Clutter Underneath Your Computer Desk with Pegboard

Tangled cords underneath your computer desk can drive any sane person mad. Besides looking unsightly, a jungle of cords is just asking for trouble. Good thing pegboard and cable ties are in your favor, because you can organize your computer desk – whether it be at home or work – for under $35 bucks.

Over at Reddit’s /r/DIY section, user ceramic_cup installed a pegboard underneath his desk using metal screws, washers and nylon spacers. Once installed, Velcro ties and zip ties were used to secure his wires, power strip, router, and gadgets underneath his desk. Hello cleared off desk.

The inspiration came from Van Mardian, an elbowroom enthusiast. You can find his tutorial on how he cleared his workspace off by installing pegboard underneath his desk over at decluttered.com.

In the matter of needing to move gadgets and wires around, Mardian suspended his pegboard with safety hasps and wooden dowels. So while he uses wire to secure his hard drives and such, it would be easy enough to move his setup around by being able to remove the pegboard with ease. The other consideration you have to keep in mind when mounting the pegboard is the drilling aspect; don’t drill too far through the top of your desk or too little (for the risk of cracking). A couple of Mardian’s readers suggest adding tape to your drill bit as a marker. While his tutorial shows wire being used to secure all of his wires and routers, you can easily get away with Velcro ties and zip ties that may simplify your organizing.

With a little bit of pre-planning, a clutter-free desk with a whole lot more space can be yours.
