Stick a Lemon Wedge in the Dishwasher for Extra Clean Dishes

There’s always something you can do with your lemon peels—heck, any citrus peels for that matter. From popping the peels in your garbage disposal, brightening your whites, and cleaning your microwave…you can even get away with tossing a lemon wedge right in your dishwasher.

Cambria Bold from The Kitchn found a fantastic way to use your any leftover lemon wedges. After loading up your dishwasher, place a lemon wedge on the top rack, or in the silverware holder, so the dishwasher can hit it with hot water. As long as you have some lemon peel, the lemon juice and citric acid will be distributed, creating sparkly clean dishes. Since it’s the citric acid you’re after, any citrus peel or wedge will do to get the job done—lime, grapefruit, and orange slices work perfect. You may, however, want to pick out any seeds from the wedge and make sure it's in a secure place to avoid clogging the dishwasher's drain.

If you don’t have a lemon wedge or peel to use, you can easily add sugar-free powdered lemonade mix to your dishwasher to get the same effects. The citric acid in powdered form works just as well as fresh lemon too and it's a budget-friendly alternative as well. Adding lemon to your dishwashing routine will leave you with fresh and clean dishes without any stubborn greasy residues along with a fresh scent to accompany it.
