To Open This Handless Dishwasher, Just Knock Twice

Manufacturers for most appliances in the kitchen are on the run to introduce advanced units, but Miele, a German manufacturer, might just be moving faster by ushering in a high-end dishwasher with even better technology.

Miele’s most recent dishwasher - Futura Diamond G6985 SCVi, is well equipped to compete with other high-end dishwashers on the market.

The Futura Diamond has a hidden control panel with the option of adding a custom control panel to the front face of the dishwasher. There’s no buttons required, as the touchscreen displays a black UI with white LED characters right on the stainless steel. You can even choose between 14 programmable washing modes, and a range of temperature settings from 40-75°.

Perhaps the most salient feature of these dishwashers is the knock2open technology. The dishwasher uses a built-in vibration sensor to detect when you knock on it and then automatically opens the door for you. While this feature is just asking for your little ones to play with the dishwasher, there is a child-lock feature to prevent just that. Without the need of a handle, this dishwasher blends right in with your cabinetry—a very European thing, and adds a design appeal that is practical since it’s easier to clean. Though, the Futura Diamond’s standard model does have an indentation for the handle if you so choose. The Knock2Open technology has been available to Europe since 2014 with Miele’s Generation 6000 dishwasher units, and is now going to cross the seas to America with the Diamond. Hooray!

If you are totally against a loud, screechy dishwasher, you’re in luck, because this thing operates pretty quietly— at just 42 dB. That means you'll be able to hear the noise of boiling water on your stovetop when the dishwasher is running. It also features an adjustable cutlery tray, AutoOpen drying, and a low energy consumption of just 260 kWh annually, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. If you’re looking to get your hands on one, the Futura Diamond G6985 SCVi Dishwasher will be available spring, 2015, to the United States for $3,699 - $4,309.
