It’s not everyday a wedding ring goes through a garbage disposal. But, it happens. Even to the most careful, cautious wearer of rings. If you’re wondering what a wedding would look like going through the gauntlet of the garbage disposal turned on, there’s no need to test out this curiosity yourself. We have Reddit for that.

Reddit user nais_kong_ipamahagi, a skilled local jeweler, received a mangled ring from a man whose wedding ring went through a garbage disposal. No more details were given in his post, and after looking through the photos, no more words are needed of how it happened. For a jeweler, this is a dream, for us just trying to do kitchen-y stuff, a nightmare. Thankfully he was able to restore the ring and posted his pictures on imgur.com of his “fun project.”

As you can see pictured below, the gold ring is severely warped and disfigured with a ton of scratches and dents. The wedding ring was so bent out of shape, the jeweler had to use pliers to open it up to fit on a ring mandrel. He then hammered the ring back into a normal, circular shape. Next, a file was used to smooth our superficial scratches. To fill in the deep gouges and not compromise the integrity of the ring, the jeweler used 14k gold and a hand torch to get the job done.

Afterwards, nais_kong_ipamahagi replaced a couple of the broken center diamonds. You may be wondering how diamonds could break. Well, I did too. Looking through the comments on Reddit and Imgur, it’s the force of the garbage disposal blades that are a diamond's worst friend. Yikes. He then polished and buffed the ring, restoring it, making it look like brand new. What a big sigh of relief. I can only imagine how the customer felt. Just look how gorgeous it turned out to be.

Lesson learned. And just because this gentleman’s ring was successfully restored, doesn’t always mean that desirable outcome will be the same for everyone.

It’s a good idea to go ahead and insure your wedding rings if you haven’t already. Accidents do happen, and quite frankly if you have a big rock or took another mortgage on your home for your ring (yes, I’m exaggerating), it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Another rule of thumb, no matter how much you trust yourself, do not place your wedding ring or valuables on the edge of the kitchen sink. There is a ring holder for these things.
