Mod a Floor Lamp into a Helping Hands Tool with Spring Clamps

A Helping Hands tool is great when it comes to soldering small projects, like a breadboard, but you’re extremely limited…to just that. Jason Poel Smith from Makezine shows you how to modify a flexible floor lamp into a Helping Hands tool that handles larger projects with more flexibility.

Before you begin, the most important step is to unplug the lamp. From there you open up the lamp body, removes cords, wires, and light bulb sockets. The whole point is to aim for an empty lamp body and arms for your Helping Hands tool. Next, drill holes in the spring clamps, and screw the clamps into the lamp arms. Lastly, pop on the stand and use it to hold a beverage, directions, and a flashlight. You can even hold up some plywood and a paintbrush.

Since the arms are flexible, they can’t handle too much weight. To get around this, simple insert steel wires for more durability.
