How to Clean Your Oven Grates Smarter, Not Harder

If your burner grates are caked with grit and grime, it’s time to get them clean. Before you start huffing and puffing about this cleaning chore, your life’s about to be changed thanks to ammonia (who could have imagined that?). By soaking your range grates in ammonia overnight, that greasy residue will slide off like there’s no tomorrow. No scrubbing, no elbow grease, it’s just going to be you, some plastic Ziploc bags, and ammonia. Oh yeah, don’t forget your rubber gloves. The process is super easy—unbelievably easy at that. Wearing your gloves, pour yourself 1/4 cup of ammonia into a large Ziploc bag per grate and seal it up. It may not seem like there’s much liquid, which is what you want. It’s the ammonia fumes that break up that crud, not the liquid. Allow each of your burners to soak overnight. If you want, it’s a good idea to place them outside so you don’t have to worry about dealing with any fumes. After your 24 hours are up, the loosened crud will wipe off effortlessly with a sponge and a good rinse of water. Oh, and please, for the love of appliances, do not mix ammonia and bleach together.
