Because if you randomly have diapers lying around the house, why not make an ice gel pack from one? It sounds crazy, but apparently you can, and like a baby’s diaper, it won’t leak even if punctured.

In the video above, YouTuber, Grant Thompson – "The King of Random," figured out the gel from a baby’s diaper could be used to make a DIY “leak-proof” ice pack. In fact, according to Thompson, “When learning about the gel in baby diapers, I made a connection that it was the exact same substance used in some of the ‘Gel-Ice’ packs we had around the house.” Pretty cool, huh?

All you have to do is pour water into a clean diaper (please, otherwise that’s just plain gross and a cruel joke to humanity). Feel free to add blue food coloring to your water too; it’s really just there for the looks and adds a commercial gel-pack feel if that’s what you’re going for.

Once the reaction takes place with the substance in the diaper, the water is absorbed, and creates a gel-like slush. It seriously looks like a blue-raspberry slushie—and even though it may be tempting and nontoxic, just don’t eat it—you’re better off going to the gas station instead.

Pour the gel slush into a bowl and then into a resealable plastic bag. This could get a little messy, so using a baking sheet underneath your work area is ideal. Pop your gel pack into your freezer, allow the cooling action to take place, and now you have yourself a back-up for when things go awry.

The best part is, when this gel pack melts, you don’t have to worry about it leaking everywhere like a bag of ice. The gel will stay in its form and is reusable. I read in the YouTube comments the gel-like substance is actually called "sodium polyacrylate"—an absorbent that keeps the water (or liquids) suspended in a gel-form. This is the same stuff they use to make fake snow with -- that goes without saying, just say 'no' to yellow snow cones. Besides the latter, how awesome is that?
