When you have a small kitchen, space is of utmost value. From creatively storing pots and pans on a pegboard to coming up with various pot rack ideas, you still might be missing out on your vertical storage capabilities.

Leela Cyd from theKitchn shares her challenging kitchen space and how she added more vertical storage. With a lack of pantry and wall space, Leela uses a tool cart to add more vertical space to her small kitchen—inspiration that came from her parents’ kitchen! Yes, a tool cart you use in your garage for your tools. If you have a modern, rustic kitchen, you can totally pull this off and make it work. Paint it to your liking – you’ve got this.

You can store your silverware at the top, and dried goods in the other drawers like grains, herbs, chocolate, etc. To make her vertical storage go even further, she popped on a butcher block from IKEA to the top of the cart for more countertop space. Since the block extends further than the tool cart, she added a hanging fruit basket to maximize her vertical storage.

If you do go this route, make sure to add some sort of cloth underneath the tool cart so it won’t scratch the floor. You could easily grab up some felt to set on your floor or even adhere to the tool cart, allowing you to easily slide it out or move around when needed.

Suppose you move to a home with a larger kitchen, now you have a tool cart you can place in the garage for your tools.
