How to Make an Emergency Candle Out of Toilet Paper and Butter

Uh oh. The power just went out. It’s dark. It’s cold. Evil clowns are laughing (okay, that’s just me being mean—I take it back). If you find yourself in a situation where you need a candle for some lighting, hold off on the buttery popcorn, you can make an emergency candle just out of a stick of butter and toilet paper.

It works quite well actually, and it’s so simple you won't believe it's not butter. How romantic. Yeah, this totally could work if you want to show your 'butter' half how much they mean to you. Nothing says I love you more than being eco-friendly and setting off the evening with a couple of lighted butter sticks. Just make sure you have an awesome dinner made—that’s all I’m saying.

The King of Random shows you how to create an emergency butter candle. The DIY trick looks super simple and easy to follow as shown in the video below, as well as his Instructables guide to walk you through the process.

Now, you’ll want to make sure your stick of butter is refrigerated and not room-temp as that could pose a bit of a mess. You slice your stick of butter in half with the wrapper intact, snip off a fourth of a toilet paper square, and create the candlewick by twisting the toilet paper. Next, punch a hole right in the center of the butter with a toothpick or any narrow, sharp object, and insert the wick. For added support, you can incorporate the wick with a paperclip so the wick won’t fall over as the butter melts down. You could probably even get away with inserting a birthday candle instead of the toilet paper wick as some commenters have mentioned on Instructables that would work all just the same with less hassle.

I am not your mother, but please, for the love of all good common sense, don’t leave your emergency butter candle left unattended. That could be another emergency I’d rather not write about. So to say the least, it’s a good idea to pop your butter candles inside of a glass container to be on the safe side.

The cool thing about this butter business is your new candle will literally burn for hours on end. For every one tablespoon of butter, you’ll get one hour of burning action. So by cutting an eight-tablespoon stick of butter, you just made yourself two candles that’ll burn for four hours each. You can also apply a similar process of making a candle out of vegetable shortening if you grab up a candle wick and place it directly into can, and level it out on top.

Now it's your churn, have you ever made one of these candles before?
