Mount a Soda Tab to a Wooden Frame for Easy Hanging

I always love coming across weird, quirky projects that are actually helpful and have a purpose. If you’re like me, than you probably have a few framed pictures and pieces of artwork that haven’t been hung up for quite some time. This isn’t out of pure laziness mind you, thank you very much, but the mounting of custom or awkward pieces aren’t always easy or practical for that matter. Those weird alligator-teeth mounts on the back of said wooden frames don’t even count; do those things even work? (Ok, so they do...but, they aren't always the greatest.)

To solve the problem of the day, it’s undoubtedly right in your face right this very moment. If you’re taking a sip from a soda or pop can, the answer to all of your wooden mounting woes lies in your can’s pull tab. It sounds mad, it sounds crazy, but it actually works. Thanks to ApartmentTherapy for finding such a gem, and thanks to Sean Michael Ragan from Make for the guide.

A pop can tab will do the trick for mounting lightweight, non-fragile pictures and artwork. The key is keeping the rivet ring of the tab in tact when removing it from your can. Sean gives out great instructions with pictures; the idea is simple: rotate the tab on an empty can, and use pliers to pull the tab upward to keep the rivet on. Then attach the tab's rivet hole to the back of your frame with a screw.

If you need a little more leverage for the tab to catch onto the nail in your wall, bend out the pull ring slightly with a flathead screwdriver. There you have it. That’s it.

The method proves to actually work; the tab hangers are tough little guys. I’d imagine if you need more strength, you could always add more pop tabs to the back of your wooden frame.

Pop can tabs turned hangers for just about 5 minutes of your time. You can’t be that. Check out Sean’s full tutorial in the link below.
