Use a Flowerpot to Change Your Charcoal Grill into a Tandoori Oven

Every part of the world has different foods and cooking methods. Indian food deliciously has no exception, and some dishes are cooked using a tandoori oven. A tandoori oven is a cylinder used to cook various flatbreads also known as naan, skewered veggies and protein. It's crazy to think a Tandoori oven reaches upwards to 900°F. In the standard kitchen, such temperatures cannot be achieved even by gas grills.

The fascinating thing is, you can change your charcoal into a Tandoori oven just by sawing off the bottom of an unglazed flowerpot. Thanks to the folks over at WonderHowTo.com, Christian Miller shares how to replicate a Tandoori oven using a charcoal grill.

In the first step, grab yourself up an unglazed flowerpot and find a comfortable, ventilated place to work—such as your garage or the outdoors. You will also need a cutting device like a zip saw or a hacksaw since you’ll be sawing off the bottom of the pot.

When you have everything ready, mark exactly one inch from the bottom (note: you can go beyond more than one inch). Then tightly wrap duct tape around the bottom of the line you drew. Using duct tape prevents cracks that may occur during sawing.

Now it’s time to cut away. After you remove the bottom from your flowerpot, go ahead and peel off the tape.

Only a couple more steps to go! Soak the sawed pot in water for 12-18 hours. This will prevent cracking when you put it on the grill. Though, make sure you allow it to completely dry before cooking with your tandoori oven.

Finally, fill up your chimney starter with charcoal and light it up. Once the charcoal is heated, pour them into the center of the grill. The pot should be placed on top of the grill over the charcoal. Once the flowerpot is hot, it’s ready to use.

Place skewered veggies in the center, and slap some flatbread dough on the inside wall of the pot (probably not at the same time though)—whoa, you just made yourself a tandoori oven out of your charcoal grill.
