Between burrito frozen insides grossing you out, burnt popcorn smelling up your room like dirty socks, and scalding hot TV dinners branding your taste buds, you’d think by 2015 we would solve our first world microwave problems by now. C’mon guys, let’s get with the program. Gosh.

Thankfully, Mark Rober did. More on Mark Rober in a few…

Today my dear friends, is the possibility of something anew. The prototype that just makes sense for even the pickiest of picky microwave dinner connoisseurs. What in the world are we talking about here? The Heat Map Microwave of course.

The Heat Map Microwave is a patented concept using a built-in infrared camera inside the top ceiling of the microwave. With an IR-camera pointing down on your food, your dish will turn into a rainbow of colors as it heats up, viewable through the screen on the microwave’s window. Through thermal imaging, you get to see your food turn different colors based off its temperature. For instance, we know blue is cold when it comes to infrared—but soon that blue burrito will turn red, yellow, and ultimately white on the display screen. White is the predetermined color for optimal heating, basically your food is saying “hey, you hungry human. I’m heated all the way through. Eat me now.” Then, you’d know to hit the stop button, or the microwave would turn itself off.

The inventor behind it all? Meet former NASA engineer Mark Rober. He’s the guy who worked on Curiosity Mars rover among many other projects. Nuking to the next levels of cooking supremacy, Rober decided it was time to update the microwave with infrared technology and came up with the patented concept and setup.

What I find impressive is Rober isn’t asking for any money through crowdsourcing. Instead, he’s asking supporters to sign a petition to show his investors there is demand for the product.

The future of the infrared microwave plans to include smart technology with your phone. Hang out upstairs or in the basement, watch your food colorfully cook on your smartphone's display, and even add more cooking time by tapping on the screen.

Don’t keep the pizza rolls waiting, go sign his petition. I want a Heat Map microwave to attend to (and this is coming from the gal who got rid of her microwave a while ago).
