How to Wrap an Extension Cord with No Tangles

Tangled extension cords are bound to haunt even the tidiest person’s workshop. From gnarly knots, hidden ends, and unraveling itself like a madman, there’s a cure to this madness to whip your extension cords back in shape. If you’re looking for a professional way to wrap cords that are easy to unravel when you’ve got a job to do, the Contractor’s Wrap may just be what you’re looking for.

Brett from The Art of Manliness shows you how to wrap your extensions cords and solves the tangled mess once and for all, thanks to a few knotting tricks learned in his early years at Boy Scouts. To begin, you plug in the female and male ends of the extension cord together. Make an overhand knot at the end of your connected cord, and then carry on through a chain of slipknots. If you’re not too knot savvy, Brett does a terrific job at walking you through the process with pictures to help you along. Once you have your successive chain of slipknots made, you create an overhand knot to tie the end of your extension cord. Then, you’re good to go and hang it up in your transit or shop.

The beauty of this is how easy it is to unravel the cord. Once you pull out your overhand knot and continue to pull, you cause a chain reaction as the slipknots unravel like it’s nothing.

No mess. No tangles.

If your extension cord is 50 feet or longer, you can still apply this method by doubling your cords (shown in the picture above).
