2 Tricks to Keep Your Refrigerator Shelves Clean

Spilled food and beverages inside of your refrigerator can leave gooey remains that are tough to scrub off. Sticky, grape juice circles and giant, almond milk puddles make for an unsightly and smelly refrigerator. Even though there are easy ways to clean your fridge, we have 2 clever tricks to help you for an effortless (& cheap) cleaning process should a disastrous spill take place (we’re pretty clumsy ourselves):

Before you get started, remember to clean your refrigerator shelves with equal parts vinegar and water; you can also clean with 1-2 tbsp of baking soda with a warm qt. of water—make sure to allow your shelves to dry before partaking in the one of the 2 options below!

Make Use of Plastic Wrap
Use cling wrap with a sealant across your refrigerator shelves. You may need to lay your plastic wrap around your shelves a couple of times to make sure you get 100% coverage. The next time your refrigerator gets covered in a soda explosion, all you have to do is take off the plastic cling for a one-step clean up. You can even use this method if you have wire refrigeration shelving as this technique may even help prevent food drippings and cross contamination in your fridge. Now, this method does seem a tad bit wasteful, but instead of replacing the plastic wrap for every teensy weensy mess—you can simply wipe your plastic-wrapped shelving with vinegar and water for a simple clean up.

Use Placemats
Those hard, plastic (see through-ish) placemats that you can find pretty much anywhere are perfect, affordable and make for a stylish refrigerator. You can line your refrigerator’s shelves with placemats, or use them for your side door coasters and bins. If you do decide to use placemats for your side door, you will need to do some modifying aka using the scissors. You can use tracing paper to create your stencil and cut your placemat accordingly; or, you can place your see-through placemats on top of your refrigerator coasters, trace them and then cut the mats. Although, you can dress up your refrigerator with different colors of plastic wrap, the placemats are our favorite trick; they are reusable as well as durable, not to mention you can change up the interior look every once in a while. Go ahead and give it a try—an easier cleaning regime is always a winner in our book.
