Newly Funded Smart Thermometer Graphs Food Temp

Calling all Master Chef wannabes, food junkies and cooking enthusiasts out there—this is the kitchen gadget you have been waiting for. SuperMechanical, the company behind Twine (a wired sensor box that has many awesome abilities such as notifying you of opening doors when you’re away from home) has successfully funded their new and innovative smart thermometer through KickStarter. They have successfully raised $177,553 with a $90,000 goal on August 30th, 2013. Called “Range,” this smart thermometer plugs directly into your iPhone. The thermometers are made out of heat-resistant silicone, enduring steamy temperatures up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. These thermometers have a 4.5’ cable (also able to stand high temps) so you can conveniently clip the thermometers onto the side of your cookware or oven rack. Along with this smart thermometer, you will need to download the accompanied handy dandy Range app (iOS only for now, sorry Android users). Together, you and your Range will be on your way to measuring quantitative data with a graph that measures temperature over time.

You will even be alerted once your food has reached the temperature you have set it to—no worries if you don’t know what that temp is; the Range app comes with common presets for temperature readings your tricky or not-so-tricky recipes should meet. Range comes in 3 styles: Aqua Range, Ember Range and Coal Range. The Aqua & Ember Range have an estimated retail of $59 while the Coal Range is estimated around $79.

  • Aqua Range has a 6” rounded tip intended for candy making, brews and for more common use.
  • Ember Range has a 3” pointed tip designed specifically for meat products.
  • Coal Range also has a 3” pointed tip, but has more heavy-duty materials for grill use.

We all know how important it is to have the correct temperatures so your food doesn’t end up overcooked, undercooked or a little in between. Range thermometers allow you to keep track of temperatures so you are able to go back and repeat a successful recipes. If you have a cooking disaster with a finicky dish, you can study your graphs and see where you went wrong. Perhaps last week's chocolate truffle was a disaster, a Range thermometer may be the answer you’re looking for. Psst.
