are you sure your video for ice maker removal is complete?

Model Number
GI6FDRxxy00
What have you tried so far?

I’ve released the tab and the electric connector. The assembly will pull forward a half-inch or so, but no further – even when I pull pretty hard.

Yes it must.

No sure what the flag means? There is no sensor to stop the icemaker from refilling. Your fill tube may have been plugged with ice not allowing it to refill. The unit does not really have any safety mechanism.

If the latter were the case shouldn’t there have been water spilling into the compartment? That was not happening …

Perhaps I should check the fill valve while the fridge is already out. I sort of downplayed that possibility since the cold water dispenser works fine
  • The valve likely had problems seating when the water was turned off. Water pressure is what holds the valve closed. You likely just had water that was dripping through the valve and froze if you were having plumbing work done. If you are concerned you could replace the inlet valve however considering the circumstances when it failed it was likely due to the water being turned off.

That scenario/explanation appeals to me too. Something that doesn’t seem to make sense, however, is that there is no sensor or other mechanism to prevent water from flowing into the ice maker assembly. Unless, it just occurred to me, drips slowly froze around and into the aperture of the rubber fill tube over the couple days I was playing plumber. PS I put in a pressure regulator about two years ago – we had 95 PSI in our neighborhood – which is set to 60 PSI. That’s still a lot of pressure, but if there’s no “safety” what other answer could there be? Anyhow, many thanks for your expertise (and patience). PS re the wheels, I think I’ll try to find appropriate wheels with about 1/4″ greater diameter. I’ll drill out the O.E. “rivet” axles, replacing them with screws and nuts.

Yes I got the picture that is the cover. To be honest I usually just grab the assembly and give it a hard yank and it usually comes out. Take a look from the inside with a flashlight first at the fill cup and tube to make sure its not a complete block of ice.

  • You can but it’s difficult with this unit once it’s back in place you would need to remove the icemaker cover and insert a jumper wire from T To H on the head unit to bypass the thermostat while holding the door switch down. Or you can just Gove it time once the icemaker thermostat reads 8 degrees it should cycle automatically.

OK, I’ll wait. ………….. I’m curious: assuming the ice in the fill cup was the problem, what sort of sensor prevented it from trying to refill?

May I guess? New water coming in warms the surrounding area, raising the temp at the icemaker thermostat

Just noticed the FLAG – what’s that for?

Must the dispenser assy be in place for ice to be made?

There is also a locking tab on the left side of the ice maker assembly that needs to be released with a flat head screwdriver as well.

Your are most likely being obstructed by the small part of the ice maker fill tube that is hitting on the ice maker fill cup. It may be frozen and it makes it difficult to get the assembly out. If you get to the top of the refrigerator there will be a cover on the top left that you can remove and that will give you access to the fill tube. You can try to gently lift up on the fill tube by grabbing it with a pair of pliers and lifting it up an inch or so. This should allow you to remove the ice maker assembly. Hope this helps.

to Matt Jr: Thank you for the responses. • To your note about the locking tab, that had been done when I sent the original question. • I will now try your suggestion about getting access to the fill tube.

My fridge is very difficult to pull out from its niche. Before doing so I’d appreciate confirmation that the object in the following photo posted to IMGUR.com is the access to the icemaker fill tube. https://imgur.com/Gu6T28G
