Hi Folks,

This unit is only sixteen months old. Customer called and said the unit was making a loud noise. Upon arrival he explained to quiet down the noise he used a hammer. Upon examination it noted that the evaporate fan motor and blade where surrounded in frost which caused the noise problem. I also noticed the trough was frozen along with a clogged duck bill. Took care of all problems but I got a call back yesterday with the same problem. Even through the duck bill was not clogged the trough was frozen. There was frost around the fan motor and blade. Looked like a defrost problem. Checked the heater, okay and the board looked okay. There is a thermistor but I didn’t check it out. Seemed to be hard wired into frame of the unit. Put in a heat sink to keep the drain hole free. It was getting late so we got it going and are going back Monday to do a diagnostic on the unit.
Again this is a fairly new unit….Any ideas?

Thank you,

Jan

HI. Was the evaporator frosted up heavily, like a normal defrost issue or at least the top half of the evap? I have seen issues with the defrost evaporator thermistors on this unit before. p# W10383615. Usually when this goes bad the top half of the evap is heavily frosted and the fan blade is hitting this frost I would check the resistance of this sensor to see if it is your issue. Did you manually defrost the evaporator when you were there originally? Also, check your door seals and center mullion of the french doors to make sure there is no warm air entering unit. This model does not have an updated drain tube kit like on some of the other models that replace the duct bill. I do not like the duck bill design, but once you take care of the frost issue it may resolve your drain issue as well. What type of heat sink did you install?

Hi Brian, The unit was heavily frosted like a defrost issue! That thermistor is hard wired into the insulation. Shall I just cut and install a new therminster? Thank you for the help! Jan
  • I think the thermistor you’re referring to is the one on the outside of the evaporator cover. The thermistor I am referring to is located on the actual evaporator, it’s clipped to it. Google the part number for that thermistor I gave you and you should be able to find an image of it. It doesn’t look like the tech sheet gives you the resistance values for that thermistor. If you take a new one out there with you you can get them both at room temperature and compare the values to see if you have a faulty thermistor.

Hi Brian, I do not see a thermistor on the evaporator only on the wall of the freezer section Part # W10383615. This is hard wired into the wall of the freezer. Small amount of wire to splice into! Take a look and let me know what you think! I appreciate the help! Thank you, JAN
  • Are you looking at the actual unit or on a parts break down? I did find that on the parts break down it does not show the evaporator thermistor. The thermistor that the parts break down does show is a white one that is typically mounted in a cover on the outside of the evap cover. When you look up this part number for the thermistor it shows an evap thermistor. This is the one we want to replace. I think the parts break down on this unit is wrong. I think I have ran into this before. IF you look at this picture you will see. http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Thermistor/W10383615/2118226. This thermistor is mounted to the top right corner of the evap. Usually on the loop of the suction line. I also think it must have this part because I do not see a defrost termination listed. Only a heater. So if there is not a defrost termination, it would need to have this thermistor for the defrost cycle. This part was most likely covered in frost when you were out last.
