I have a customer that NEVER cleaned her front loader Samsung washer. It was made in 2009. During the spin cycle it makes a thumping sound, and the drum looks like an egg shape rotation. Other than the noise, it seems to be operating fine. But, why the noise and the weird egg like rotation?

Hi. Is the unit spinning in that odd rotation with clothes or without clothes in the unit or both? A lot of times an off balanced load will cause that. Also, check the shocks as well as the springs. A bad rear bearing or broken basket could cause this as well.Is it loud in spin or does the basket feel loose? The thumping sounds leads be to believe the basket is loose or broken.

I ran it with a light load of clothes. I could see the springs from the top of the machine after opening it. They look good. is there a way to check the bearing without tearing it apart? Also, is a broken basket easily repaired? Obviously this customer is poor. And I really cant afford to put to much time into a possibility bad and worn out machine. Thanks
  • Small loads of clothing will cause the unit to got off balance and cause this type of rotation. It does not explain the noise though. Bad bearings usually sound like a jet taking off in spin. Not clunking. But could be a broken basket. Usually you can tell a bad bearing or broken basket by lifting up on the front if the basket. It will have a lot of play when you lift up and down on the basket with the tub staying still.
