I was a little stumped when I was asked to walk a customer thru the actual process of a freezer defrost thermostat.
He wants to know step by step what a thermostat does and how it works.

Model Number

Serial Number

What have you tried so far?

Opened the back wall of the freezer and found the evap coil frozen from top to bottom.

Hello
The defrost thermostat is a safety device . It wires in series with the defrost heater to prevent it from staying on too long. If the defrost control gets stuck in the defrost cycle it will shut the heater down at specific rated temperature. Most defrost thermostats on the older models are 50 degrees to 80 degree cut off. Ok, what ( if any ) is the relationship between the thermostat to the evap fan motor? The customer was trying to get a mental image of the interaction between the thermostat, defrost element, evap fan and so on. He was a VERY unique man. So I attempted to draw a diagram, but failed miserably. Ha ha. Matt, maybe I should have ask you to explain the time cycle/ and events of what takes place when the fridge goes into defrost mode. Thank you. I really appreciate your time and insight on these issues.
  • On some older refrigerators the defrost thermostat is wired in series with the evap fan as well. So if the thermostat goes bad the defrost system and evap fan will not work. The freezer must get to the temperature the thermostat is rated at before the fan will operate.
