The fan in my refrigerator has been making a loud noise, and I’ve noticed some ice build-up near the fan housing. Is this a sign of a faulty heating unit? Can I just clear the ice to solve the problem?

Hi Scott. When an evaporator fan motor stops running it can cause ice or frost build up near the top of the evaporator.IThe frost will be thicker at the top of the evaporator then the bottom. Typically with a defrost issue the whole evaporator frosts up and you will notice the unit not cooling properly. I suspect that with the noise from the evaporator fan motor and if the frost is thicker at the top of the evaporator you have a bad evaporator fan motor. If the frost is thick across the whole evaporator you have a defrost issue. If its just ice around the fan and the fan blades are hitting the ice causing the noise you need to see where this ice is coming from. I hop this is helpful!
