There is a huge ball of ice engulfing the evaporator in the back of the unit, what would cause this to happen?

Best guess would be that the drain has frozen over and is just backing up into and accumulating around the evaporator. Have the unit turned off for at least 24 hours to thaw and see if you can clear the drain from there before doing another system check. Hope this helps!
